Just below Elephant’s Eye, in the Tokai Forest, Cape Town, South Africa is under SANParks management. Situated in Porter Reform Estate, owned by the Government of the day in 1883, used as a reformatory alongside the Porter Reformatory Estate, was declared a National Monument in the 1960's
10 May 2011 follows the signing of a ten-year lease agreement, renewable for a period of 15 years, with the Table Mountain National Park Manager, Paddy Gordon. In terms of the lease agreement, SANParks will directly or indirectly invest approximately R12 million towards renovations and improvements to the premises and surrounding areas.
Simon van der Stel, first Governor of the Dutch Cape Colony, interested in botany, considered one of the founders of South African viticulture established vineyards producing a famous dessert wine. He held the grazing rights on the lands around the Tokai Manor House.
The farm was granted to Johan Rauch in 1792, then sold to Andries Teubes and after a series of owners, the property was purchased by Petrus Eksteen in 1802. Designed by South Africa's first, French-born South African architect & engineer, Louis Thibault, who designed many of our finest buildings in a distinctive neo-classicism manner. The Manor House was considered the most outstanding homestead in the Cape with its gable crowning feature and the curving twin flight of stairs and the tall columns creating an unusual front balcony.
Owned by Petrus Michiel Eksteen who hosted the finest banquets, were renown for their well-stocked wine cellars was declared insolvent in 1849 but the lavish parties continued with his brothers who took over the Estate.
One New Year’s Eve Eksteen Senior dared his son Frederick to ride his horse up the stairs and into the dining room. Frederick accepted the wager! The guests watched expectantly as he mounted the steps on horseback. The horseman pranced around the dining room table, spurred on by cheers of encouragement!
Departing, watching horse and mount descend the steep steps, the horse slipped, the game young man broke his neck in the fall and lay dead alongside his horse at the bottom of the staircase.
To this day, a ghostly Horseman is often heard in the Tokai Manor House and surrounding Forest on New Year’s Eve!
