In today’s video, I’m rebuilding the rear nearside brake calliper that came off my Volvo V40 in a previous video - • Volvo V40 brake calliper replacement
I had to replace it initially because when I changed the front brake pads, something didn’t feel quite right, so I went round the vehicle to check the hoses and callipers. That’s when I found that the nearside rear calliper was leaking. In order to get the vehicle back on the road ASAP, I bought a new calliper from my local auto parts store, Wheel Tapers in Wigan. Instead of disposing of the calliper, I thought that I’d rebuild it because at some point, I’d like to put it back on the car as it’s the OEM one with Volvo stamped on it. Originality n’all that…
This rebuild kit was sourced online at £19.49 and includes all the seals you’ll need plus a new piston and bleed nipple, as well as all the associated grease you’ll need too. I’m not going to lie, I strongly dislike rebuilding callipers. I rebuilt a twin pot split calliper for a motorbike I once had and then I’ve rebuilt a few C1 callipers. All dirty and fiddly jobs, but ultimately do save money in the long run, so don’t expect much of me in this video, alright lol?
I started by cleaning the calliper up with a wire brush and some brake cleaner. I could have used the parts washer to make a proper job, but to be honest, I was too lazy to move the blasting cabinet from the top of it, so I didn’t use it. I then started to remove all of the old seals and piston, for which I used a pick and a pair of grips. When it came to removing the old bleed nipple however, that’s when things got interesting. I ended up using a deep 9mm socket and a LOT of heat to free up the seized bleed nipple and not shred the thread on the calliper. Once everything was off, I carried on cleaning the calliper until it was time to start rebuilding. Building up the calliper is essentially the reverse of disassembly, but here, red grease is your friend! Don’t be afraid of using it, just give it a good clean when you’re finished building it.
