In this video, I tear into the New West piston and cylinder kit for the Stihl MS361 clone and see what it’s really made of. I measure the port timing, look at the finish work, and then bolt it onto the dyno to find out if the numbers back up the talk. This New West setup didn’t just hold its own—it managed to beat Stihl’s published horsepower and edge out both the Hyway and Meteor kits I’ve tested earlier.
If you’ve ever wondered whether aftermarket kits can truly compete with OEM, this test might surprise you. Grab a coffee (or something stronger) and settle in while I put this saw through its paces.
Stick around—more saw nerd content is on the way.

I’ve got a dyno, and I’ve spent a lot of time upgrading it. It’s homemade, the software’s custom, and it’s more comprehensive than anything you’d find on the market. Testing and modifying chainsaws is what I’m all about. FYI, I haven’t offered dyno or porting services, but depending on the circumstances, I might start taking some requests.
Be sure to subscribe and keep up with all the chainsaw mods, farm life shenanigans, and the good ol’ redneck ingenuity I love sharing. From firewood and sawmill work to raising animals and making all kinds of gadgets, I’ll show you how we make life a little easier here on the homestead.
