Pope Leo XIII's encyclical "Rerum Novarum" (May 15, 1891) addresses the rights of workers to organize and the value of such organizations for the spiritual as well as the material good of its members. Byzantine Catholics founded just such a society, the Greek Catholic Union, also in 1891.
In this last session on Rerum Novarum, we raise some questions about how Pope Leo's principles apply to current, post-industrial conditions. We also ask why Catholic professionals have largely failed to organize into societies that could promote their professional development in dialogue with Catholic teaching and offer witness in the civic arena.
