One of my favourites, a reliably good cropping apple with good flavour. In my view the best substitute for Cox's Orange Pippin from which it was raised (crossed with Delicious) in New Zealand in 1932. Texture more crumbly and melting that crisp and crunchy. Rich flavour including hint of violets when fully ripe. Some tendency to scab, but much easier to grow that its parent Cox.
This apple was going to replace Cox, but was not accepted by the market, partly becuse of its irregular russetted appearance, which I find attractive.
Rosanne Sanders says ripe from November to January, we find more like late September to Christmas, but in any event this is a mid to late season apple. Most of the varieties I have discussed so far are early (I am trying to work my way through the varieties as they ripen) It is of the UTMOST importance that when you are planning an orchard, you consider the time of ripening and use of each apple, you don't want all your apples ripening at once, or else you will have too many to eat and then none at all, so for a steady continuity of apples each ripening in season choose a mixture of apples that ripen in succession.
All things considered, I think there are few mid season apples better than Kidd's Orange Red.
