Alaska seaplane flying to the Brooks Falls in the Katmai National Park, almost on a daily basis during summer months, has been a privilege, and a wilderness experience like no other in the Last Frontier.
The Brooks Falls camp in the Katmai National Park, is accessible only via float plane (or boat from King Salmon), and during summer, a high concentration of Alaska Coastal Brown bears feed in this area, as Sockeye Salmon migrates to Brooks Lake from Bristol Bay.
Around summer solstice, the Salmon start their migration from Bristol bay, into the Naknek River, and from there, they swim into the Naknek lake, and reach the Brooks river. Their destination - the small tributaries of Brooks Lake.
The only bears to regularly inhabit Katmai National Park and Preserve are Brown bears. Taxonomists currently consider brown bears and grizzly bears to be the same species (Ursus arctos). The difference between the two is somewhat arbitrary. In North America, brown bears are commonly distinguished by their access to coastal food sources such as runs of salmon, while grizzly bears reside further inland.
