In 2021 Project Apis m. directed funding to project with Dr. Stephen Pernal (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada), who has been working with Dr. Erika Plettner (Simon Fraser University), Dr. Stephen Cook (USDA), and master’s student Robert Lu (University of Alberta) to further assess a compound found to be effective against Varroa. Previous lab studies have shown that this compound works by preventing the mite from finding the bee and attaching to it. Without being able to feed on the bee, or reproduce, the mites eventually die.
Having treatments with diverse modes of action against Varroa is part of the future of combating it. We need to add more tools into the toolbox for beekeepers. This research update from Dr. Pernal explains how they assessed this compound in the lab, and then graduated into field trials, which is a huge step towards getting a product beekeepers can buy closer to the market. More work is planned to optimize how to work with the compound in 2022 and 2023. Check it out!
