The first thing we did was find companies that paid more for the same job. Things aren't the same as they were 30 years ago when you worked for the same company your entire career and then retired. People these days average a new job every two to three years. And they get paid more.

Secondly, Brit worked overtime. Many industries will pay time and a half for overtime. It's tiring, but it may be worth it. To us it was.

Thirdly, if you're self employed, you can increase what you charge for your services. I've done this many times and it always results in a raise. When Brittany and I got married, I had few clients. Getting more clients increased my income substantially. If you're already booked solid with clients but still want more income, ask yourself how you can serve more people at a time.

Fourth, we took on contract work, or work on as as needed basis. Companies generally pay more for these types of gigs because they don't have to pay health benefits, etc.

Fifth, I took on a couple extra side jobs. They were small, but provided a little bit of extra income so we could pay off debts faster.

And sixth, something Brittany and I didn't earn much doing while we were becoming debt free, was developing passive income sources. How to make money online and things like that. The "problem" with all of the above methods we used is that they all traded time for money. Which is fine if you need money quickly. But we don't want to have to be working the rest of our lives. We'd like to earn money while we sleep, as Warren Buffett says a lot.
