The innovation of the 1969 Chevrolet Blazer was to simply offer a shortened pickup truck, which both increased interior space, and lowered the cost of production with a shared platform.
Today on the Monster Hobbies "What's in the Box?", we will be looking at the AMT/ERTL/Model King #21638P 1972 Chevrolet Blazer. This is a model kit unboxing video we hope you will enjoy.
The original K5 Blazer was a short wheelbase truck. It was available in 1969 model year as four-wheel drive only; for 1970, a two-wheel drive model was offered. There were four choices for power plants: the 250 straight-6, the 292 straight-6, the 307 V8, and the 350 V8.
In 1969, the Blazer was designed and marketed to compete with International Harvester Scout and the Ford Bronco. The Blazer quickly became popular.
For the first time, it married the off-road capabilities of the Scout with the "luxury" features like air conditioning and automatic transmissions routinely available on pickup trucks. By 1970, the Blazer was already outselling both of its older rivals. Ford, Dodge, and even Jeep would counter with similar shortened pickups, with the Dodge Ramcharger and Jeep Cherokee. It also came as a convertible.
The model came out from AMT in 1970, a year after the real Chevy Blazer came out. It was updated to a 1972 model in 1972 and has also been released with an updated grille to make it into a GMC Jimmy. This model kit has been reissued several times in it's long production run.
This is a pretty nice casting but time has given it a fair share of mold marks and flash that you can remove with sand paper and a no.11 and no.16 hobby knife.
This kit was intended for advanced model builders. The model contains 99+ parts, includes full color decals, white, clear, transparent red, and chrome parts.
The AMT/ERTL/Model King 1972 Chevrolet Blazer model truck kit includes a 22 piece stock 350 C.I. V8 engine with air cleaner, carburetor, intake manifold, 2-piece engine block with transmission, oil pan, distributor, engine front cover, oil filter, upper and lower radiator hoses, cylinder heads, valve covers, F.W.D. gear selector, starter motor, exhaust manifolds, fan belt, alternator and fan.
There is also racing engine components which consist of a chrome plated intake manifold for eight velocity stacks and racing exhaust headers with separate collectors. This is a terrific unit that looks awesome when finished.
The chassis is a highly detailed unit that consists of a separate frame, exhaust crossover pipes, front driveshaft, muffler/tailpipe, front leaf springs, steering box, spindles, tie rod, steering arm, factory shocks for stock and heavy duty shocks for the off road choice. The 3 piece stock and off road wheels attach through metal axles. Two body reinforcements glue to the underside of the interior bucket just like on the real Blazer.
The interior is a multi-piece affair built upon the interior tub that includes separate 2-piece bucket seats, 2-piece rear seat with separate arm rests, dashboard, steering wheel and column, tachometer, center console, spare tire mount with 3-piece spare tire, heater, transfer case shift lever, and optional dual fuel tanks with chrome caps for the Off Road option. The only thing missing is the floor pedals.
The windshield, side windows and rear glass are separate pieces that you can glue into the inner surface of the roof for a more realistic appearance.
For the body, you get a nicely detailed 2-piece tail gate, tail gate hinges, chrome bumpers and front grille, separate headlights, hood with an option to cut a hole out for the velocity stacks to stick through, a tow bar, battery heater motor, tail lights, back-up lights, chrome gas cap, driving lights with lenses, spot lights, rear view mirror, and side trim. The roof is detachable and features an opening rear window.
The decals in this kit were redesigned in the 1970's to duplicate the factory "Feathers" option. I have included a picture of that vehicle in this video. The "Feathers" Blazer was painted white.
This model is easy to assemble and it does go together quite well. It will look good on your shelf, or in an off road diorama. Either way, you will have fun building it.
