Heading West from Winton just before lunch we drive through some beautiful country, not what i was expecting. Definitely in grazing territory. The recent rains have turned the land green in parts, and it is a contrast to the plains of rock and sand. Really feels far away out here with only the occasional truck and long distances between landmarks. We stopped at Middleton to ask about an alternative route to Windorah instead of going all the way back to Winton and down. There had been a lot of road closures over the last few weeks due to flooding. The cooks husband at the Hotel had said he drove down the Old Cork road and it was ok. Found the Min Min Hotel ruins site and Unknown Travellers grave and stopped for a night hoping to see some ghostly action. Was very quiet late at night out there and then in the distance we saw some strange weaving lights, could just see them then they would vanish. This went on for about 15 minutes until we heard some shots and realized they were shooting feral pigs or roo's. Then another set of lights far off in the distance had us intrigued. They would go up then down and disappear, then reappear. Eventually after what seemed like a long time a truck drove past. It is so flat and dry out there you can see for maybe 50 kilometers and hear nothing until the last moment. Anyway, it was fun being there, it is a strangely baron place. Boulia was our refueling stop and we asked at the Min Min Experience Centre if the road to Birdsville was open. Unfortunately it would be closed for a long time which changed our plans. Originally we wanted to drop down to Birdsville and go to Diamantina National Park but they were now out of reach. Having heard this was probably the case we had already an alternative, which was to take the Old Cork road to Jundah. Back East on the Winton rd to our camp at the Hamilton Hotel ruins where there was a toilet and shower and the possibility of seeing the lights if we stayed up. Ocean and i sat outside until 1am and watched an otherworldly sunset and moon set. No lights but we were visited by an owl a bat that came in close range then a giant moth flew into Oceans head and scared us, things seemed to be getting interesting. Unfortunately no weird lights. I took some great Astro photo's then went to bed. The road to the Cork Homestead campground takes you through some great scenery ending up at the ruins and camp along the Diamantina River. Stayed here a couple of days enjoying this quiet part of Queensland. Will definitely be coming back here, maybe on our way to Diamantina Park.
Channel country is unique in its scenery and feel, remote, rugged but soothing hard to put it in words.
