The traditional "compact," the idea that a degree equals a good life, is completely broken.

There are 40 million Americans right now who have student debt but no degree. They paid the price but never got the prize.

Meanwhile, many universities have shifted their focus to fundraising and real estate growth instead of actually preparing students for the future of work.

I sat down with Eric Gertler, the Executive Chairman and CEO of U.S. News & World Report, to figure out how we fix this.
