Poison should be terrifying in theory, but in practice it’s one of the weakest mechanics in Dungeons & Dragons. A massive portion of monsters simply ignore poison damage or the poisoned condition. In addition they have low DCs, high prices, and effects that are easily outclassed by basic class features and spells.
Yet poison in D&D has incredible flavor and storytelling potential: assassins, political intrigue, sleeper agents, exotic monster parts, black-market alchemy.
In this video I break down why the math fails, why the poisoned condition becomes the most commonly blocked debuff, and why even famous options like purple worm venom can’t compete with magic weapons. Then we rebuild poison from the ground up: alternative damage types, effects that bypass blanket immunities, expanded crafting rules, clearer harvesting components and more!
Here is my complete guide to making poison work.
Enjoy!
