Franz Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata, composed in 1824 for the now largely forgotten arpeggione, is a fascinating example of the interplay between instrumental innovation and musical creativity in the Romantic period. The arpeggione, a kind of hybrid instrument combining features of the guitar and violoncello, was developed by the instrument maker Johann Georg Stauffer. This sonata is one of the few important works written specifically for the arpeggione.
Tobias Krebs' guitar is an exact copy of Stauffer’s guitar, made by the Czech luthier Jan Tuláček. Schubert is also known to have owned Stauffer guitars, so it makes sense to arrange the Arpeggione Sonata for this instrumentation.
Schubert's tonal innovations in this work, particularly his skillful use of the arpeggione, give the sonata a unique character.
