Debt and deficit out of control: B.C. government to raise taxes, cut jobs
B.C.’s Finance Minister Brenda Bailey has delivered the 2026 provincial budget, outlining plans for rising short-term deficits and long-term fiscal adjustments across the province.
The budget projects a deficit increase to $13.3 billion next fiscal year — up from $9.6 billion — before gradually declining over time. Key highlights include major investments in health-care infrastructure, expanded pharmacare coverage, and funding for medical education, including a new medical school at Simon Fraser University in Surrey.
At the same time, the province’s debt is expected to grow, infrastructure timelines are being paced or delayed, and changes to taxes and PST coverage are being introduced — including expanded taxation on certain services and adjustments to income tax brackets.
Officials say the goal is to protect core public services while rebuilding a stable revenue base, but business groups such as the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade have criticized the plan, giving the budget a low rating.
In this video, we break down the major takeaways, impacts on taxpayers, and what it could mean for residents and businesses across British Columbia.
