Abstract:
In this lecture, the nature of electrosorption at metal electrode surfaces will be discussed. The key role of local charge in facilitating the electrosorption (and coadsorption) of electrical double layer components as a function of potential and pH at monometallic and bimetallic surfaces will also be described. Electrosorption features observed using single crystal electrodes are re-examined in the light of such analyses. In particular, for platinum, the veracity of ascribing so-called hydrogen underpotential (“Hupd”) and “Pt-OH” states to chemisorbed H and OH respectively. Hence, some implications for electrocatalytic reactions involving adsorbed OH species will also be addressed briefly.
