West African regional bloc ECOWAS has sent a delegation to Niger to negotiate with the military officers who took over power in a coup a week ago. It is hoping to find a diplomatic solution before it resorts to military intervention. Defence chiefs of the bloc are already meeting in Abuja as they prepare to take action if the coup leaders fail to meet their demands.
