🏛️ From Huiai Street to Zhongshan Road: A Century of Change
Today's Zhongshan 4th, 5th, and 6th Roads were called Huiai Avenue during the Qing Dynasty, serving as the main east-west thoroughfare through Guangzhou city . In 1919, Huiai Street was widened into a modern road, named Huiai East Road, Huiai Middle Road, and Huiai West Road . In 1948, to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen, these roads were officially named Zhongshan 2nd Road through Zhongshan 6th Road .
This area has historically been Guangzhou's political and commercial center. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Huiai Street was lined with government offices like the布政司 and巡撫部院 . By the early 20th century, arcades began appearing along the road, forming the unique "stalls under the arcades" layout we see today.
🏘️ Taojie Street: 200 Meters of History
Tucked between Chaotian Road and Jiefang Middle Road off Zhongshan 6th Road, there's a narrow alley less than 200 meters long—Taojie Street, the soul of the entire flea market area .
The name "Taojie" comes from Tao Cheng and his son Tao Lu of the Ming Dynasty. There used to be a temple here dedicated to them, and traces of history can still be found in the wall crevices at the end of the alley .
The Golden Age (1980s-1990s): Back then, people brought back大量 second-hand electronics and parts to sell cheaply at Taojie, benefiting countless radio enthusiasts . Gradually, more audio shops and vinyl record stores opened, with Taojie becoming famous for audio equipment—a must-visit for hobbyists,发烧友们, and tourists . The saying went, "Beijing Road is women's paradise, Taojie is men's Taobao land"—and it wasn't an exaggeration .
Taojie Today: Stepping into Taojie, you enter a completely different world from the high-rise buildings outside. Shops line the narrow street, one after another, with goods spilling out onto the pavement—there's a "street market" feel reminiscent of Guangzhou in the early reform and opening-up period . Most people bargaining with shop owners are men; women are rare . Besides audio equipment, cables, and electronics, you'll find配件, hardware, lamps, and even stalls selling shoes, glasses, and tea—amazing variety at down-to-earth prices .
Treasure Hunting Tips:
Taojie's entrance is very narrow; first-timers easily walk past it! Look for a small signboard introducing Taojie
Most items are negotiable—try offering half the asking price
Always test electronics on the spot
Bring cash—some old stalls don't accept mobile payments
Taojie usually closes around 6-7 PM
📻 Jiangjundong Electronics City: Collective Memory of "Men's Paradise"
Inside the CTS Plaza on Zhongshan 5th Road once stood an even more famous landmark—Jiangjundong Electronics City. Built in 2000, it was Guangzhou's comprehensive electronics trading market, known as the "Taobao Paradise for Guangzhou Men" .
Jiangjundong specialized in audio equipment, car audio, karaoke systems, second-hand phones, and electronic components. The second floor focused on computer parts and office equipment . In its heyday, middle-aged men would happily spend hours here browsing, buying or not—just enjoying the hunt .
Unfortunately, Jiangjundong closed at the end of 2021 and was demolished in 2022, now replaced by a parking lot . However, many vendors moved nearby, and the "treasure hunting" spirit continues in Taojie and surrounding areas.
