Torsades de pointes (TdP) is a specific, life-threatening type of ventricular tachycardia characterized by QRS complexes that appear to twist around the ECG baseline. It often occurs in the setting of a prolonged QT interval, which can be congenital or acquired due to medications or electrolyte imbalances. Symptoms may include dizziness, palpitations, or fainting, but it can also lead to ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac death. Immediate treatment involves intravenous magnesium sulfate, addressing underlying causes like electrolyte abnormalities, and potentially cardioversion or pacing to stabilize the heart rhythm and shorten the QT interval.
