The first appearance of the Kool-Aid man came in 1954 when he was introduced as the “Pitcher man” in an image created by New York art director Marvin Potts. General Foods wanted a visual to appear next to their slogan -- “a 5-cent package makes 2 quarts” -- and Potts created a character inspired by his son’s smiley face drawings. It wasn’t until 1974, though, that the mascot turned into a walking and talking glass pitcher filled with red colored Kool-Aid.
Commercials for the drink typically began with a group of kids engaging in a host of hard-playing activities and finding themselves complaining of thirst when they’d bellow “Hey, Kool-Aid!”. Then on cue, the Kool-Aid man would make a disruptive entrance, crashing through walls while exclaiming his “Oh yeah!” catchphrase.
By the 1980s the character reached cult status and became the subject of various offshoots including video games and comic books until it was retired from use in 1994. In 2011 Time magazine rated the Kool-Aid man #6 in their list of “Top 10 Creepiest Product Mascots” by asking the question: “Why did he have to cause such a mess every time he entered the scene?”
