A Visayan lullaby, “Ili, Ili, Tulog Anay” translates to “little one, go to sleep”. It is sung by a caretaker to a child and mentions a mother who is out buying bread. Its music and text transcription is published in the book “Folk Songs: Songs of the Visayas” by Priscilla Magdamo.
Surrounded by tall sugar cane grass toils a mother struggling to support her infant child, longing to hold her baby, but having to sacrifice her time to earn a living.
Based on music and text transcription of Priscilla Magdamo as sung by Maria Abitang published in Folk Songs: Songs of the Visayas by Silliman University, 1957(?).
