Izzy's "Stop the Flood" 5th grade science project

Hurricane Matthew Oct 2016 had a huge impact on Izzy and her Science project. Izzy saw how devastating the flood waters were in Haiti where the people were unable to protect their homes and their families from the floodwaters. She set out to test what other alternative materials could be used in sandbags if you did not have access to sand. She tested Sand, mulch, potting soil, and gravel and found Soil to be the BEST Material for stopping flood waters. This was great news as she said most people can dig up dirt almost anywhere and could protect their homes if they did not have access to sand. Her heart behind this project was to find a way for someone that did not have access to sand for their sandbags to still be able to sandbag but w/ an alternative material so they could protect their family and homes.

Izzy said her next project would be to test household bags that could be used in place of commercial plastic or burlap sandbags( that can be pricey and many stores had run out of them during hurricane matthew). So she wanted to test household items that are free, like grocery store plastic bags, plastic garbage bags, cloth recycle bags to see if these could be used just as efficiently to stop the flood waters. Izzy believes if she could educate people on the importance of sandbagging it could save homes and lives and it does not have to cost money!!! Izzy believes she can changing the world with Science, And she can!!! Hope you enjoy her project as much as she did doing it.
