Continuing his impressive form, Pink Siifu delivers another shift in sound and aesthetic on his newest solo album, “GUMBO’!”. Siifu incorporates bits and pieces from his previous works as well as from new, unheard influences and blends them altogether to form this melting pot that ends up being “GUMBO’!”
Opting for a more inclusive and laidback approach compared to his last solo album, “Negro”, Siifu places most of his attention on the overall feel and sound of this project. This focus on the sonic production makes this album extremely easy and fun to listen to. Even without a firm grasp on what the lyrics are conveying, the listener can wholeheartedly feel what sentiment the song is trying to portray.
Siifu spends a lot of his time on the album paying tribute to his roots. Whether that be his immediate family, his partner, his city, or his ancestry, his appreciation for the people and environment around him is an integral part of this project. And I pointed it out in my reaction but most of the content on this album isn’t necessarily new. Most of Pink Siifu’s subject matter has remained consistent throughout his career and rightfully so as what he is speaking on holds an enormous amount of weight, however I like being able to receive a similar message from an artist but have it delivered in different ways. For example, the general delivery in Ensley was intimate and hopeful while the delivery in Negro was chaotic and wrathful but a lot of the lyrics go hand in hand. In my opinion, the same lies within this album. The lyrics condemning and criticizing police and the government, expressing love for Black people, showing gratitude for his family, spirituality and much more are reiterated on this project but delivered in a different way. The overall delivery or aesthetic on “GUMBO!’” is a festive and soulful one that immediately catches my attention. I don’t think I’ve heard a more fun album this year. This album made me want to dance, mosh, drink, party, relax, cook, all pretty much at the same time. It’s a perfect record to put on in the company of good friends for a good time.
