The general rule in Texas is that a witness may be impeached by showing that they committed a prior crime that was a felony or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude for which the punishment ended in the past 10 years. This is known as impeachment by criminal conviction. However, there are certain exceptions under which impeachment by criminal conviction is allowed outside of the 10-year range and others under which an impeachment for a prior crime will not be permitted even though the prior crime falls within the 10-year period.
