BNP’s newly elected Members of Parliament took oath this morning at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban — but with a major twist.
They did not take oath as members of the Constitution Reform Council.
BNP leader Salauddin Ahmed said that, under instructions from party chief Tarique Rahman, MPs were told not to sign the council form. According to BNP, the Constitution Reform Council is not yet part of the constitution and lacks proper legal framework.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath around 10:35am. Tarique Rahman was present at the ceremony.
BNP secured an absolute majority with 209 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami, with 68 seats, will serve as the main opposition for the first time.
Later today, President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath of the new government at the South Plaza.
