This Car Breaks Every Toyota Rule

Pause everything for a second—because this is Toyota doing something most people are going to miss, and that’s exactly why it matters.
The 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland looks, at first glance, like another outdoorsy electric SUV with roof rails and a dirt-road press photo. But spend five minutes actually looking at what Toyota built here, and it becomes clear this isn’t cosplay, hype, or a compliance EV. This might be the most honest electric SUV Toyota has made so far.
The bZ Woodland comes standard with all-wheel drive and makes three hundred seventy five horsepower, which is more power than most “adventure” SUVs people daily drive right now—gas or electric. Toyota backed that up with real hardware, including eight point four inches of ground clearance, X-MODE with Grip Control, Multi-Terrain Monitor, and a legit three thousand five hundred pound towing capacity. That last number is important, because towing is where most EVs quietly fall apart. Toyota still put a number on it anyway, which tells you this car was actually tested, not just imagined.
Range is rated at up to two hundred eighty one miles, or around two hundred sixty miles with all-terrain tires. Is it class-leading? No. Is it realistic for how people actually use these vehicles? Absolutely. The bZ Woodland isn’t trying to be a coast-to-coast road trip hero—it’s built to be a regional explorer you daily during the week and load up on the weekend.
Toyota also made a smart move with charging. The bZ Woodland uses a NACS (Tesla-style) port, but includes a NACS-to-CCS adapter as standard equipment. Translation: Toyota isn’t betting on one charging network—they’re betting on flexibility. With eleven kilowatt AC charging and both one twenty and two forty volt cables included, there’s no ecosystem lock-in and no extra hoops to jump through.
Inside, Toyota leaned into comfort without losing the plot. A fourteen inch touchscreen, dual wireless phone chargers, heated front and rear outboard seats, heated steering wheel, eight-way power seats, and available ventilated front seats make this a vehicle you can actually live with after a muddy, cold, or dusty day outside. Cargo space tops seventy four cubic feet with the rear seats folded, thanks to EV packaging and a flat load floor.
The bigger picture is where the bZ Woodland really clicks. Toyota didn’t try to make this a Jeep, a Bronco, or a Rivian competitor. They built an electric alternative for people who would’ve bought a Subaru Outback in a few years—and that’s a massive audience. Practical all-wheel drive, usable ground clearance, real interior space, and Toyota durability, now electric.
The old bZ4X is gone, and that’s not an accident. Toyota didn’t refresh it—they restarted. The bZ Woodland feels like Toyota asking the right question this time: not “how do we build an EV,” but “how do people actually live with one?”
And honestly? This feels like the EV Toyota should’ve built from the beginning.
