About the Work 🖼️
The Harry T. Peters “America on Stone” lithography collection is a remarkable representation of American culture, history, and society during the early 20th Century. The collection consists of over 1,400 printed images on limestone plates, where the plates are then etched into and inked in order to create the desired image. Peters’ collection captures a wide range of subjects, but two of the most prevalent themes throughout the collection are baseball and patriotism.
Baseball, an iconic American sport, is a central focus in many of Peters’ lithographs. Images of baseball players, teams, and stadiums are abundant in the collection, showing the significant role of the sport in American society. The lithographs portray the progress and evolution of the sport, from the early days of baseball with players wearing woolen uniforms to the emergence of baseball in urban areas and the rise of Babe Ruth. The lithographs also showcase the intense rivalry between teams, the excitement of World Series games, and the love Americans had for the sport.
Alongside baseball, the collection also contains numerous patriotic prints that celebrate the American spirit and ideals. These prints depict American flags, historical scenes, and monuments that are symbolic of the country’s identity and history. In many of these lithographs, a sense of nationalism and pride in the American way of life is evident.
Through this collection, Peters captures the essence of American culture during the early 20th century. The collection’s images are a reminder of the values and beliefs that Americans held dearly. Whether it is the love of a national sport or the allegiance to the country, the collection celebrates the patriotic spirit of America. Overall, the Harry T. Peters “America on Stone” lithography collection is not just a representation of the past, but a celebration of the American spirit and its ideals that continue to resonate with people today.
