A prominent Ugandan opposition figure has announced that he has temporarily left the country after spending nearly two months in hiding following the disputed presidential election.
In a message addressed to “Fellow Ugandans and friends of Uganda,” the leader accused President Yoweri Museveni of seizing power against the will of the people and ruling through military force. He claimed the election outcome was imposed “at gunpoint,” sparking a wave of repression against his supporters.
According to the statement, security forces allegedly raided his home a day after the election in what he described as an attempt to harm him. He said he managed to escape and remained hidden while the authorities searched for him across the country.
The opposition leader also alleged that the government conducted widespread operations to locate him. These included raids on the homes of colleagues, roadblocks and vehicle checks, arrests of police officers assigned to his campaign, and surveillance of his family residence.
Despite the efforts, he said he avoided capture because ordinary citizens protected him.
“The people of Uganda sheltered me and protected me,” he said in the statement.
He confirmed that he has now briefly exited Uganda to engage with international allies and partners. During the coming weeks, he plans to meet supporters and stakeholders abroad before returning to continue what he described as the struggle for freedom and democracy.
He urged his supporters to remain united and focused during his absence, promising that the movement for political change would continue.
The government has not yet issued an official response to the claims.
