This week on Trip 4 2 Australia, we are taking you to the absolute edge! We tackle the trek to Steep Point, the most westerly point of the Australian mainland. From the rugged Zuytdorp Cliffs to the pristine waters of Shelter Bay, this is a bucket-list destination for any 4WD enthusiast.
📍 The Journey: Useless Loop Road & Beyond
The adventure begins long before you hit the point. We navigate the infamous Useless Loop Road. Don't let the name fool you—while it starts as a wide gravel road, it quickly turns into a challenging, single-lane soft sand track. Corrugations are a given, and lowering your tire pressures (we recommend around 18-20psi) is non-negotiable to avoid getting bogged in the dunes.
⛺ Camping at Shelter Bay (Turtle 2)
We set up camp at the iconic Shelter Bay (specifically the Turtle 2 site). It’s the perfect base for exploring the area. The water is crystal clear, the fishing is world-class, and the sunsets are unlike anything else. Watching the sun dip below the horizon here means you’re seeing the very last sunset on the Australian mainland.
📜 A Slice of History
Steep Point (originally named Steyle Hock in 1697 by Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh) is steeped in maritime history. From the tragic wreck of the Zuytdorp in 1712 to the legendary land-based game fishing that draws anglers from across the globe, this place feels truly wild.
🚢 Future Horizons: Dirk Hartog Island
Gazing across the South Passage, we’ve already got our sights set on Dirk Hartog Island for a future trip. It’s a 15-minute barge ride from Steep Point, offering even more remote tracks and "Return to 1616" conservation history.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Be Prepared
There is NO fuel, NO water, and NO supplies at Steep Point or anywhere in Edel Land National Park. You must be 100% self-sufficient.
Fuel: Fill up at Overlander Roadhouse or Denham. Carry extra jerry cans.
Water: Bring more than you think you need.
Waste: This is a "pack it in, pack it out" area. Take all your rubbish with you.
💰 2026 Trip Costs (Approximate)
National Park Entry: $17.00 per vehicle (if you don't have a WA Parks Pass).
Camping Fees: $15.00 per adult, per night (Bookings via DBCA Park Stay are essential!).
Future Dirk Hartog Barge: Approx. $380–$700 return for a 4WD (seasonal).
