A Family holiday in Arcachon and a visit to Cap ferret in 1971.
Arcachon is a seaside resort town in southwest France that's known for oyster harvesting. Its 4 districts are named after the seasons. The Ville d'Été (summer) quarter is home to shopping streets, the town’s sandy main beach and a casino in the 19th-century Château Deganne. Ville d’Hiver (winter quarter) has extravagant 19th-century villas. South of the town is the Dune du Pilat, a 2.7-km natural sand dune.
On a headland dotted with pine trees, Cap Ferret is a chic residential area with swimming and surfing beaches like Plage de l’Horizon, plus views onto the famed Dune of Pilat on the other side of Arcachon Bay. The Phare du Cap Ferret lighthouse offers displays on cartography. Casual bars and al fresco seafood restaurants edge tranquil roads amid fishermen’s cottages and quaint ports used for oyster farming.
Timetable Petit Train du Cap Ferret.
Once arrived at Bélisaire Pier which is the main pier of Cap Ferret it is possible to reach the ocean beaches thanks to a small train present for more than a century. This tram crosses from east to west the peninsula. There are only two stops: Bélisaire and Plage de l’Horizon. The 2 km of the small train journey takes 12 minutes. Valiant diesel locotractors on a 60cm Decauville track pull the wagons.
