A private prison company outside of Kansas City has hired more than 100 employees to staff an ICE detention center that currently has no detainees to oversee.
CoreCivic wants to reopen the former prison in Leavenworth to play a big role in President Trump’s immigration deportation strategy – it can hold up to 1,000 detainees. But the city of Leavenworth sued, because CoreCivic has not obtained a special use permit.
For the last two months, a Kansas judge has stopped the prison from operating, and there is no clear end in sight for these legal proceedings.
Yet CoreCivic shows every sign that it intends to fulfill its contract with ICE.
