U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a security NOTAM (A0012/25) warning civil operators about a “potentially hazardous situation” in the Maiquetía Flight Information Region (SVZM FIR) over Venezuela.

The FAA advisory cites a worsening security environment and heightened Venezuelan military activity, warning that threats could pose risks to aircraft at all altitudes — including overflights, approaches, departures, and even aircraft on the ground.

In addition, the FAA requires U.S. operators to provide at least 72 hours’ advance notice of any planned flights in the region via email to [email protected].

Pilots are also urged to report any safety or security incidents while operating in the area to the FAA’s Washington Operations Center.
The alert remains in effect until February 19, 2026.

According to the Associated Press, the warning comes at a time of increasing U.S. military presence near Venezuela, including naval deployments.

The FAA also flagged increased GNSS (GPS) interference over Venezuela — a serious concern, as GNSS systems are critical for navigation, surveillance, and security on board aircraft.

While the NOTAM does not explicitly ban U.S. airlines from flying over Venezuela, civil overflights are now subject to stricter oversight. According to Reuters, American Airlines has already suspended overflights, and other carriers are weighing their options.
