Plastic gears are also increasingly being used in performance gearing applications. Therefore, it is important to be able to design them reliably. For both steel/plastic and plastic/plastic gear pairs, the low stiffness of the plastic and simultaneously high torque leads to changes in the contact ratio (premature and late mesh). Due to the typically complex shape of the wheel body geometries and the large tip edge radii from injection molding, it is important to correctly consider the geometry of the gears in the calculation. To do so, a fully automated process is performed, in which an FE model is created that determines the non-linear material properties based on uniaxial tensile test data, which is then used for the rolling of the tooth partners in Abaqus. Evaluation and determination of the relevant FE result variables, such as flank pressure or tooth root stress, is also automated.
This tutorial is intended for everyone who would like to learn about the precise calculation options and user-friendly operation of the current version of the #FVAWorkbench.
