6 years in the making... Actually the original build time was 3 months...
Once I stripped off the white plastic binding, and started to re-bind with ebony wood, I ran into problems bending to the tight curves of the Scroll..
No matter how hot I got it, or wet or how much steam I applied, I couldn't make that wood bend around that tight without splitting.. I asked many expert Luthiers that build mandolins and they assured me it was possible, but I couldn't do it..
So it sat for 5 and 1/2 years.. I finally figured out how to do it and will finish this instrument in the next 6 months.. I have assembled it fully without finish, set it up and tuned it.. It sounds great.. Then I tore it back to what you see here.. But it will be done soon Ray... and when it is, I will post a video of the owner playing it......
