Spear & Shield's horde clear is quite bad, tho it is decent against Skaven. It is quite good against Berserkers for a shield weapon. It's also good at sniping elites while under pressure with the Push Attack - Light - Light combo.
Overall I wouldn't recommend this weapon on Huntsman since you don't need the elite killing power thanks to his ult, but need horde clear/dps which this weapon lacks. If you want the safety and control, Sword & Shield is probably the better option.
Spear & Shield is probably way stronger on Merc if you want to go defensive without losing too much killing power. Merc can also reach the Mauler (when attacking) stagger breakpoint on push (Power vs Chaos + Power vs Infantry on the Charm + 1 stack of "The More the Merrier!")
