This is a PSEUDO Tier List (600 BST!!) where we'll be going through topics instead of ranking everything, mostly because 90% of the rentals are either complete garbage or hopelessly outclassed. Instead we'll be trying to create a concise (LOL) guide for those who want to try and play through Pokemon Stadium 2 on their own. Here's the outline of our strategy:

Stadium 2 Battle Mechanics
Trap Rentals (Do not use!!)
Staple Rentals (Always use!!)
Niche Rentals (Sometimes use!!)
Perilous Enemies (Nailed the weak spot...)

Ownership is best, of course, but renting can be a great stopgap for trainers trying to find their footing in the world! They'll add support for imported teams someday, right?
