Today’s flight is in the Piper PA-28, departing Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, under cloudy skies with isolated showers and a bit of Caribbean haze. The plan is a hop over the water to Aeropuerto Antonio Rivera Rodríguez on Vieques, an airport and approach I’m not very familiar with, which makes the arrival even more interesting. On the first approach, increasingly bumpy conditions and gusty winds—likely enhanced by the surrounding hills near the field—force a go-around and a reposition to fly the opposite end of the runway for a safer landing. Come along for the full approach, missed, and second attempt as I work through the turbulence, gusts, and terrain-induced bumps, talking through decision-making and why executing a go-around is sometimes the best option.
