Filmed by my aviation friend Ian Austin at Heathrow and Gatwick during 1998 - 2000, this video special shows the British Airways fleet during a time of great change.
In June 1997 BA made a very bold decision to update it's livery from the very sophisticated and business like Landor Associates scheme introduced in December 1984, to a much more international and ethnic look.
The livery received many mixed reviews and infamously in mid 1997, former ex Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher publicly displayed her dislike of the tails by placing her handkerchief over a model of one of the designs!
I personally despised what they had done to their fleet and barely attended Heathrow for over 2 years, I could not stand the sight of these tails.
The tail is the identity of an airline, unfortunately this BA livery started a trend, which continues today, of the ever more dumbing down of airline liveries.
Many classic logos and designs being completely discarded and any sense of an airline's history completely ignored, in favour of bland and quite frankly boring and soulless corporate identies, more attuned with banks or pharmaceutical companies.
That makes me very sad.
This period, 1998-2000 saw BA at maximum useage of the Jumbo Jet fleet, they had nearly 100 in operation! Yes read that again nearly 100 Boeing 747's in operation, most flying out of Heathrow.
So lets head back to just prior to 9/11 when Heathrow was still a spotters paradise and we were left to enjoy the magnificent Boeing 747's and other classic aircraft in peace.
Thank you Ian for having the foresight to capture the magic in moving images. AND yes, Concorde ALWAYS steals the show!
