During our 2012 trip to Uganda we were joined by singer/songwriter ‘Akello’. Originally from a small village near Gulu, Akello now lives in Kampala. She travelled with us back to the north of the country and was not only invaluable acting as a translator when we visited the Acholi communities in the area, but also performed some of her songs for the Influences series, accompanied by the local music groups.
While the Adungu is often played solo or in small groups, the Adungu Cultural Troupe is a large ensemble that showcases the very best of this Ugandan variation of the Nyatiti. Like the Nyatiti, the Adungu is an arched harp instrument with between seven and ten (sometimes more) strings. The sound box is usually covered in
animal skin. Occasionally, it is also used as a percussion instrument, with a musician sitting behind it and hitting the box with a beater.
Recorded: 6th December 2012
Location: Naguru, Kampala, Uganda
