As he approached a turn in the road, he noticed a brown bear sow and three cubs feeding along the shoulder, near a sign warning visitors not to feed the bears. The irony of locating a bear family near a sign warning against feeding them seemed to be a social media-worthy occasion. The sow was cautious as Omar pulled over, but didn’t flee upon his presence. This must have seemed to him as a subtle welcome from the bear, one he surely would accept.
Now Omar had no way of knowing, but this sow had a bit of a torrid past. There had recently been two other incidents in which foreign tourists had overstepped their bounds and gotten too close to the protective mama bear, and she had not taken the trespass as tolerantly as the authorities would have liked. Having inflicted minor wounds on the tourists, she slipped away before her identity could be confirmed, but officers had their suspicions.
As Omar snapped pics and filmed a few seconds of video, the small sow approached him slowly. She circled in an indirect path, leading her closer and closer to him. Once she was about ten yards from him, Omar turned his back to her and pointed at her on the screen of his cell phone. He snapped several photos as a broad smile overtook his face, sheltered in his riding helmet.
The sow eventually worked her way toward the brush near the gravel bar and began searching for her cubs. Omar took this as his cue that his bear viewing was over for the day. He returned to find his friends and tell them what he had seen, and show them the amazing photos and videos. The following day, Omar decided to return to the spot where he saw the bear family, this time bringing some food for them. He knew feeding the bears was strictly against the rules as the authorities had posted more than 20 signs indicating that along the relatively short drive to the lake.
Just to round out the information that Omar was undoubtedly lacking, hunting zone 5, which was the zone Omar had found the bears, had a brown bear population of 112 animals. The management goal was set at a maximum of 25 bears for the habitat, but local politicians were lost in the debate to properly manage the population. This may have placed the bears in a stressful situation of overcrowding and overcompetition, especially when you add in the presence of the tourists.
As Omar searched the bag of snacks he had brought, the sow approached more aggressively than she had the prior day. Her head was high, and her eyes were focused directly on the man as she crept toward him. By the time she got to within a few feet, Omar noticed that she wasn’t staring at the bit of food he held out for her, but at him.
After a few hours, Omar’s friends had noticed he hadn’t returned and decided to investigate. They knew where he had told them he’d found the bears, and rode their bikes to the gravel pullout. Parked neatly on the side of the gravel, they found Omar’s motorcycle and confirmed it was his by matching the license plate. When yelling for their friend yielded nothing, the bikers put together the grim potential and notified authorities.
Wildlife officers converged on the location and began to search for clues. Toward the edge of the pullout, they found a drag trail and some blood. Following the trail into a ravine, they dropped almost 250 feet in elevation before discovering Omar's mangled corpse precariously resting on a steep and tangled slope. A recovery team was organized, but the sow wasn’t ready to give up her prize just yet.
As the recovery teams worked on fastening Omar’s corpse to a litter, the sow emerged from the bushes and bluff charged them. Thinking she may just be surprised by their presence, they yelled and tried to chase her off, but she was not going to leave peacefully. Having brought along hunting rifles, the decision was made to kill the sow and eliminate the apparent and dangerous threat she had been posing to human visitors to her territory.
I could find no source indicating the condition of the sow, but judging by the pictures and video, I estimate her body weight to be around two hundred pounds. This is small as far as brown bears go, but she had been providing for and protecting her three cubs. There was no mention of what became of her cubs either.
