Mobilizing For Our Communities: Spotlight on Access-A-Ride Reform

Описание: The recent failures of the transportation system in New York City have provided a small window into what NYLPI’s clients with disabilities face daily as they try to navigate Access-A-Ride, New York City’s paratransit service. For many individuals with disabilities, Access-A-Ride is the only form of transportation they can use, but it has been plagued with significant problems regarding on-time performance, reliability, and efficiency. This severely limits riders’ abilities to retain employment and to access medical care. NYLPI reached out to community partners and formed the Access-A-Ride Reform Group (AARRG!) to address the inequalities within the paratransit system. AARRG has been very active in community organizing, training, individual advocacy, and public advocacy. As a result of AARRG’s efforts, the MTA has implemented a pilot on-demand program to better address rider needs. This pilot program is an important first achievement, and AARRG will continue to work to achieve equality and parity for New Yorkers with disabilities who seek efficient, effective, and safe transit.
