Watch repairmen / watchmakers have bills just like everyone else. It sounds unkind but we are not a charity. We have to earn a living to support our families.
We are Christians so all of our videos are Christian Republican family friendly.
The most important watch related video I've ever filmed. For your own sake watch this video.
If we earn $35 per hour for 40 hours a week for 49 weeks we make about $54K a year before taxes and medical insurance. After these are removed from our wages we might get $25-28K. In 2021 this is about the absolute minimum a man can earn to support a family living in a crappy apartment. The truth is, most of watch repair people earn less per hour and have to work 50+ hours a week. There is a reason auto mechanic shops charge $80-$120 per hour labor. Watch watch mechanics should pay themselves no less than $45 an hour.
We all get requests from very nice people who ask us to repair their mechanical watch and they do not want to spend more than $50. Unless there is an extremely simple problem that only takes a few minutes to fix, we will end up in big trouble if we accept these terms. If we open a watch and see a bit of the case gasket touching the hair spring and find this is the only issue we pop in a new gasket charge the person $25 (diagnostic fee) plus the cost of the gasket.
This scenario almost never happens. There is a reason why what repairmen charge a minimum of $180 to touch a mechanical movement. Hard or impossible to find parts may be damaged to the point they need replaced. It takes 3+hours just to disassemble and assemble a mechanical watch if there are no problems. If there are big issues it can take much longer. It takes time to clean parts. The chemicals are not free. Then you have to clean the inside of the case. Sometimes a crystal might crack, chip, or break even though you are very careful. Sometimes when we open watches we find that another watch repairer has been in the watch and damaged it or did not reinstall all the screws ect. It sometimes takes hours to track down parts for watches particularly if they have a rare movement or if the watch is really old.
We have to be kind to ourselves. We do not need to torture ourselves when we do not need to. We must learn that it is ok to say "unfortunately, I will unable to repair your watch for under $200 minimum." Also, we are not obligated to give a person a reason. The bottom line is we are not a charity. We are just like anybody else. We have to earn money to pay our bills.
Important:
1) never work on a watch unless you are near certain they will pay.
2) If the person comes across as an a-hole than send him on his way.
3) If there is a watch that you get a bad feeling about it let somebody else work on it.
4) If the watch has a huge amount of sentimental value to the customer be careful. He or she will become completely unhinged if any issue presents itself.
5) I personally never work on watches with a value of over $3K. Why? At this point in my life I don't need the stress. If I can earn a living working on Seikos I'm perfectly happy.
6) Make sure you have insurance. We are human. We make mistakes. If we mess up on a watch we need to have insurance to help us replace it.
7) Make it crystal clear that you never know how much the bill will be.
8) Don't lock yourself into a period of time. Do not say "I'll have your watch done in 2 weeks" Issues always come up. Tell the customer that it often takes a month. If it is done in 3 weeks he will be really happy.
9) If you already have 30 watches you are working on don't accept any more jobs. You will get overwhelmed.
10) Keep records of every tiny thing you have done to a customers watch and every part you had to purchase. This way they will hopefully understand when their bill is $300.
11) If a customer comes in with a broken mechanical Timex we have to tell them nicely that such watches are easily found on eBay in very good condition for $40 but to repair them would cost at least $150.
Demoncrats / communists are attacking Christians. We as republicans should always remember that remaining loyal to Jesus is more important than anything else in this world. Even though satan and his democrat allies steel elections to force every form of evil upon us, I think we as Republicans should still vote in order to do what is right. More importantly, we need to tell people about Jesus.
The demoncrats hate God. Please do not let them intimidate you. They enjoy threatening Christians. We need to pray for each other. People similar to the demoncrats lived before the great flood. They are now in hell. Unfortunately, they chose to reject God.
The people of ancient Sodom and Gomorrah were homo sexuals. According to the Bible, all those people are now in hell. Genesis chapter 19. Matthew 10:15. Luke 17:29. Please turn to Jesus. He wants you to go to heaven. Jesus loves everyone but not all people are saved.
