The Soviet Union was caught off guard early in the war in 1941 when Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, a brazen renunciation of the non-aggression pact and a massive invasion of the Soviet Union.By September of that year, 1.5 million square kilometers had been occupied, and some 75 million people had fallen behind enemy lines.In the first five months of the war, the Soviet army lost 20,000 tanks, 23,000 aircraft, and 12,000 anti-tank guns.In August 1941, the United States relieved the soviets by sending weapons and supplies.Fighter jets account for a large part of the aid.Soviet pilots, however, were rarely satisfied.One exception, of course, was the Bell Aircraft P-39 Flying Snake.
At that time, the United States had a variety of new fighter jets to choose from, such as P38, P47, P51, etc., so P-39 was not popular in the American army, so the disfavor P-39 was relegated to the role of trainer aircraft, responsible for training new pilots in the United States, and even reduced to the fate of target aircraft for a time.Later, however, the P-39 was sent to the Soviet Union and the success of the Eastern front was so great that Stalin asked the United States to continue production of an improved version of the P39 Flying Snake, which became our hero today, the P63 King Cobra.
1941年德國發動了巴巴羅薩行動，悍然撕毀了互不侵犯協定大舉向蘇聯發動進攻，蘇聯在戰爭初期被打了個措手不及。當年9月，就有150萬平方公里國土被佔，約7500萬人口淪陷敵後。蘇聯損失了大量人員和技術兵器，在戰爭前5個月內，蘇軍就損失了2萬輛坦克，2.3萬架飛機，1.2萬門反坦克炮。1941年8月，美國開始向蘇聯援助武器和物資，緩解了燃眉之急。在援助的物資中，戰鬥機佔了很大的比重。然而能讓蘇聯飛行員感到滿意的可不多見。當然，有一個例外一一那就是貝爾飛機公司的P-39“空中飛蛇”戰鬥機。
因爲當時美國有多種新式戰鬥機可供選擇，如P38、 P47 、P51等，因此P-39在美軍中並不受歡迎，所以失寵的P-39被降格當教練機，在美國國內負責訓練新飛行員，甚至一度淪爲當靶機的命運。可是後來，被送往蘇聯的P-39在東線戰場上捷報頻傳，斯大林請求美國繼續生產P39“飛蛇”的改進型號，這就是我們今天的主角——P63“眼鏡王蛇”戰鬥機。
