One of the main deities in Yoruba mythology is Oshun. She embodies beauty, music, sweetness, and joy, and she is the goddess of the river’s fresh waters. I was inspired by her spirituality and by one of her main Batá drumming rhythms, Iyesá. This piece captures the essence of Afro-Cuban jazz in all its splendor. -Dayramir.
Yamaha artist, Cuban pianist and composer Dayramir González return to the Miner Auditorium at SFJazz to celebrate his new album V.I.D.A. along with his New York quartet which features Juan Chiavassa on Drums, Nacho Mateu on Bass and Takafumi Nikaido on Percussion.
About the Artist:
Yamaha Artist Dayramir González is an electrifying force in contemporary jazz—a visionary pianist, composer, and bandleader whose work bridges the rich Afro-Cuban musical heritage of his homeland with the innovation of modern jazz. A three-time Cubadisco Award winner, Dayramir made history as the first Cuban national to receive Berklee College of Music’s Presidential Scholarship, and was honored with the Wayne Shorter Award for Most Outstanding Jazz Composer in 2013.
Handpicked by the legendary Chucho Valdés, Dayramir headlined Carnegie Hall’s “Voices of Latin America” series in 2012 as the face of a new generation of Cuban jazz pianists. His quartet has since captivated audiences at iconic venues such as Lincoln Center, Times Square, Kennedy Center, and the La Jolla Music Society, as well as on international stages including the London Jazz Festival, Roma Jazz Festival and the Havana Jazz Festival.
His latest project, V.I.D.A., is a vibrant celebration of life, blending modern jazz with deep Afro-Cuban rhythms and reimagined Cuban classical traditions—both accessible and danceable, and joyous.
Dayramir González is not only carrying forward the legacy of Cuban music—he’s expanding it, creating new forms and dialogues through composition, orchestration, and performance. As Carnegie Hall declared, “Dayramir González can be added to the pantheon of distinctive Cuban jazz voices.”And as the Wall Street Journal affirms, he is “a stunningly gifted composer and arranger… an entertainer who captures the attention and live spirit of the audience in every performance.”
“Promising newcomer Dayramir Gonzalez can be added to the pantheon of distinctive Cuban Jazz Voices. This Afro- Cuban pianist, composer, and arranger is setting the Latin jazz world on fire in America.”-Carnegie Hall
"A confident statement of Cuba-ness. Mr. Gonzalez’s writing and playing are breathtaking.” - DownBeat (4.5 stars)
