Every June 16, Bloomsday is celebrated around the world in memory of Leopold Bloom, the main character of Ulysses who over the course of this day in 1904 wandered through Dublin. Ulysses recounts his reflections and his encounters.
The city of Paris also left its mark on the life and work of James Joyce. In the early 1920s, the author gravitated to the literary and artistic circles of the 5th arrondissement, where he wrote the last chapters of what would become his most famous novel, finally published in 1922 by the bookstore Shakespeare and Co, then located near Odéon.
We are therefore planning to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publication of Ulysses with a “Joyce Season” which promises to be already rich in events and discussions.
As a prelude to these celebrations, the Irish Embassy in France and the Irish Cultural Center have joined forces to give away 500 copies of Ulysses and Dubliners in various locations in Paris.
We are encouraging Parisians to seek out a copy, read it at your leisure and then leave it at a different location.
Don't forget to take a photo of the book where you left it - on a park bench, on the terrace of a café or even on a metro platform - and publish the photo on social media, using the hashtag #ParisJoyce2022. In this way you will help us take Joyce’s work to 2022 and beyond!
