My obsession with the Sonor Phonic goes back to the time when everything was locked down during COVID. I bought my Bronze Metallic Phonic in 10 13 14 16 22, no snare from interstate, as soon as lock down opened the borders, I drove the 2000km return trip to pick it up. Since then, I have owned another couple of kits. Then came the opportunity to acquire this beast. The Centennial Phonic (100th Anniversary) drums are quite remarkable. Build quality that was way ahead of its time, added to that I came across this immaculate set of drums from a local drummer who contacted me and gave me the opportunity to buy it off him as he's retiring from playing. I am so happy that I finally own a set of Centennial Phonics, let alone of this condition. Thank you Roy for allowing me to adopt these drums, she is in a good home, and amongst some Sonor cousins as well.
I could not wait to soundcheck these drums; replaced all the batter heads to EVANS UV2 on toms, G1 on the snare drum. And with open tuning, zero muffling on all drums (incl the kick) I tried to capture the woody, warm, full bodied tone of these shells. Make sure you're wearing headphones or listening through decent, full range speakers.
Another notable element of this soundcheck was I was also able to record / soundcheck some new cymbals I've recently added (and still auditioning) for an upcoming tour. UFiP 21" Thin Class Crash / UFiP 15" Omnia Hats and UFiP 16" Class Crash. Delectable.
Recorded at Dirty Laundry Studios Brisbane QLD, Australia AUGUST 2025
