Infusion is my favorite coffee shop. While I always ordered in English, this time I ordered only in the CHamoru language because I wanted to see how CHamoru would be received in an every day situation where the language is usually not used. I was extremely anxious and made several mistakes. Although I lose 90% of my language skill when being recorded or under pressure, I'm happy I did it. The reaction of the staff was absolutely hilarious, and we all had a big laugh after everything was said and done. This was all recorded pre Covid-19.
I always believed that if the CHamoru language is to be revitalized, the language must be normalized in every day situations like ordering from a coffee shop. And it all starts with us, CHamoru language learners, using the language beyond our CHamoru language social circles.
To all the CHamoru language learners: don't let anything stop you from speaking your language.
