WAS THE BALROG EVIL?
This is one of Middle-earth's most haunting questions. The Balrog of Moria appears in The Fellowship of the Ring as pure destruction—shadow and flame, ancient terror, the doom of Khazad-dûm. It killed King Durin VI, destroyed the greatest dwarf kingdom ever built, and slaughtered thousands in a single day. But what if the monster remembered being something else?
This is the story of Thráin, son of Náli—a dwarf miner who was there when his people accidentally woke Durin's Bane. A survivor who saw his friends burn, his kingdom fall, and his entire civilization scattered across Middle-earth. But in those final moments before death, the Balrog showed him something impossible: a vision of what it had been before the corruption. Before Morgoth. Before the fall.
The Balrog wasn't always a demon. Once, in the Music of the Ainur, it was a Maia of fire—a spirit that helped forge the world, that sang in harmony with creation, that loved its work. But corruption doesn't happen all at once. It came gradually. One small choice at a time. One compromise. One step toward darkness that seemed reversible—until it wasn't.
This story asks the uncomfortable questions: How many small steps toward darkness does it take before you can't turn back? How do you know if you've already taken the first ones? And is killing a corrupted being justice—or mercy?
