In this episode of Trading Fours, we sit down with Charlotte McLean – vocalist, educator, and course coordinator at JMI - whose work bridges the worlds of Folk and Jazz. Once a self-described “choir nerd,” Charlotte discovered her voice through the influence of jazz greats like Betty Carter and Art Pepper and now shares her journey of finding artistic freedom through improvisation.
Charlotte reveals how she's evolved her teaching through perceptual motor learning, and letting students teach themselves rather than over-instructing. We explore her philosophy that "anyone can learn jazz if they want to devote the time," her approach to vocal technique, and her take on working with an accompanist. The conversation flows through her eclectic influences from Chris Thile to science fiction, her current obsession with writing ballads, and the importance of finding balance between music and life.
"You've got to enjoy music. Otherwise, why would you do it? I think it's that metaphor of the well. You want to always have a little bit left in the well... so that you can start again tomorrow."
