Hello neighbor, this is Curt with etrailer, and today we're gonna take a look at the CURT Hitch Cargo Carrier and see how it works with our 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander. Now a hitch cargo carrier is an excellent way to just make some extra room for those items that are either too big, or items that you don't want traveling with you inside of the vehicle. So if you ask something like a generator or a lawnmower or something like that you want to transport, those are usually things that either might smell a bit bad or just get the inside of your cargo area really dirty. This way you could transport them outside of the vehicle without any issue. It's going to be a powder coated steel, so it's gonna be very corrosion resistant and very durable, and it's gonna have this mesh bottom to it so that any kind of debris, rain, anything like that is just gonna go right through the bottom and not pull up in it and add to any of those corrosion concerns. So this cargo carrier has a maximum weight capacity of 500 pounds.
However, you do wanna double check the owner's manual of your vehicle, of your Outlander, and see what the maximum tongue weight capacity is, because in all likelihood, on the Outlander, it's probably not gonna be that full 500 pounds. Plus the cargo carrier itself weighs 64 pounds, so you're gonna have to factor that into the tongue weight as well. Now as far as how it fits on the Outlander, we do have a two and a half inch rise in the shank, and that really helps out, because on this vehicle, the hitch does sit rather low to the ground, and that's just gonna help us out with some extra ground clearance, especially since it sticks out a good distance from the bumper. If we're gonna take a measurement from the bumper, it's gonna be 31 inches all the way to the end of it. So you do have a little more than two and a half feet extra sticking out behind the bumper that you're gonna want to make sure that you account for whenever you're backing up or trying to parallel park.
The other thing that we're gonna take a look at is the ground clearance. We'll just see how much that two and a half inch rise is gonna help us out. And we end up with a ground clearance of about 13 and a half inches all the way here at the end. That's a pretty decent amount of ground clearance, but also because of how far this sticks out from the bumper, I would still be very conscious of that whenever I'm coming up on a steep driveway or incline. And one more measurement that we're gonna take a look at is going to be just how much, how high can you stack something, basically, and still have access to your cargo area So from the bottom of the basket here, up to the bottom of our lift gate, you're looking at about 13 inches.
So as long as you keep it 13 inches or lower, you should be able to get full access to your lift gate and the cargo area of your Outlander. And that's a look at the CURT Hitch Cargo Carrier on our 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander. I think this would be an excellent option compared to a lot of cargo carriers out there, mainly because of the rise in that shank. Without that, we'd only have about 10, maybe 11 inches of ground clearance, and for me, with it sticking out that far, I just think that that's kind of concerning as far as, you know, bottoming out and things like that as you're moving along. But if you decide that this is gonna be the cargo carrier for you and your Outlander, once you get it and use it a few times, please let us know what you think about it in the comments below.
Sharing your experience with us and with other neighbors just like you can help them determine if this is the right cargo carrier for them. Once again, this is Curt with etrailer. Thanks for stopping by.
