“World War II was decided in one frozen city.”
By 1942, Nazi Germany was unstoppable. Europe had fallen, and Hitler turned east, aiming to crush the Soviet Union. That path led to Stalingrad, a city chosen for its name, its symbolism, and Hitler’s pride.
The Germans bombed it into ruins. But the rubble became a battlefield. Soldiers fought room to room, sometimes hand to hand. Winter froze bodies where they fell. Starvation followed.
Then the Soviets struck back.
In a massive counterattack, they surrounded an entire German army, over 300,000 soldiers trapped. Hitler ordered them to stay. Supplies never arrived.
By February 1943, the German army surrendered.
It was the first total destruction of a Nazi force.
After Stalingrad, Germany never advanced again.
The war didn’t end there, but it turned.
And that’s why Stalingrad was the most important battle of World War II.
